What is an Earthquake?

An earthquake is the shaking of the earth's surface. It results from releasing energy in the lithosphere, which creates seismic waves. 

In other words, an earthquake is a weak to violent shaking of the earth's surface caused by the sudden movement of rocks and materials below the earth's surface.

The effects of the earthquake are ground shaking, soil liquefaction, fires, landslides, tsunamis, fissures, and ground rupture. It can also cause human casualties.  Most of the deaths and injuries result from building collapses.

What caused the Nepal Earthquake?

Due to the convergent plate, the margin between the Eurasian and the Indian tectonic plates. Here, Nepal is located on the top of the plate margin, which makes it prone to earthquakes. Another reason is that MHT is near the Himalayan fault line, which causes many earthquakes.

 

How did the earthquake affect tourism in Nepal?

All kinds of business industries and service markets have fallen down, and people are in miserable situations. The tourism industry has also fallen very low or down since the earthquake due to damage in popular tourist areas and a decrease in the number of tourists day by day. 

In the case of 2015, tourist arrivals fell to a six-year low of 538,970 after the April 25 earthquake.  

Which country helped Nepal in the Earthquake?

Over 330 million dollars had been either directly provided or pledged. India, China, and several other countries quickly responded by sending in aid and rescue teams. The Government of India was the first country who helped Nepal in the first phase.

 Nepal has a long history of earthquakes. 7 June 1255 is the first documented earthquake event in Nepal. This was the time of King Abhaya Mall .The quake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale.  It took the life of the king and one third population of Kathmandu. 


Nepal Earthquake 2015

Nepal earthquake 2015 is also  known as Gorkha Earthquake. The earthquake struck near the city of Kathmandu in the capital Nepal on April 25, 2015. About 9,000 people were killed and many thousands were injured. More than 6 lakh structures in Kathmandu were damaged or destroyed.
